Firs Road Back Garden

When I first met my clients in 2004 they were planning a refurbishment of their bungalow and wanted me to design the front and back gardens using the proposed architect’s plans. The re-build took a little longer than expected and the bungalow became a house.

The back garden is approximately 18.5 wide metres wide and 124 metres long with a steady slope up to the end. With a garden so large it was decided to initially focus on the immediate area behind the house and to leave planning for the rest of the garden for another time.

On stepping through the French Windows into the back garden one finds oneself in a Courtyard enclosed by raised borders of approximately 50cm high (I always say that a raised border should be just high enough to sit on comfortably with your glass of wine). The raised borders and retaining walls were constructed with blocks, rendered, with brick detailing on all the corners and capped with a brick soldier course. A 5 metre diameter paving circle is in the centre with two raised areas enclosing it. One area is a border and the other a fish pond with fountain. The central area easily accommodates a large garden table to cater for summer family gatherings.

Four steps then take you from the Courtyard up to the lawn level. A path and borders surround the central lawn. This area then gives access via steps to the garage and the other parts of the garden.
