A Large Country Garden
Wickridge House is a large Georgian house built into the side of a hill. When I first arrived I found that the only real level space was the terrace in front of the house. There was very little ‘living space’ for my clients to enjoy their beautiful surroundings. So my brief was clear, to somehow create a garden out of the side of a hill.
The design required excavating from around the house to create courtyards. So as not to have to pay to remove tons of spoil from the site the soil was moved down below the terrace to create a new lawn.
The original retaining walls around the house were dismantled and the stone reused to build the new walls. Indian Sandstone was used throughout and so as not to ‘break the bank’ islands of paving were used on the terrace with gravel surround.
The Courtyard is reached by walking through a green oak pergola; an ornamental pond is set against one of the walls with a fountain gently trickling into it.
The Herb Garden was situated here so as to be seen from the kitchen window. Box hedging edges the formal beds with herbs for the kitchen growing within.
Having a large garden with many changes in level so close to the house, we had an interesting challenge to produce a workable plan for all our needs. Mike came up with a very imaginative and practical design, and after a number of summers, it's proved how good it really was!
