Country Garden Three

Country Garden Three

When I was asked to design the garden of this grand old Georgian bath stone building I immediately decided that the ‘car park’ at the front had to go to be replaced by something more fitting for the front of the house. Over the porch there was some balustrade detailing which I decided to reference, I used Portland stone balustrade to enclose the front garden. Much to the delight of my client we unearthed an old well which we transformed into a feature of the terrace by setting a wrought iron grill over it and installing a spot light. We used Indian Sandstone paving throughout as this complemented the bath stone of the building.

Further into the garden was an old pond which had definitely seen better days. The intriguing story behind the shape is as follows, the master of the house was called up to go and fight in the first World War, on his departure he gave the lady of the house a locket to remember him by, as with so many who went away to fight he never returned. The lady also lost the locket, so in her husband’s memory she had this pond built in the shape of the lost locket.

We cleaned out the pond, re-lined it, installed pumps and under water lighting and restored it to its former glory.

When I first arrived the Courtyard at the end of the house was filled with three huge conifers making this area very dark and unwelcoming. We took out the conifers, constructed a raised border and a pergola and finished it with a water feature. The brief I was given was to create a Mediterranean feel to this courtyard which I think that I have achieved.
